From the Blogosphere Weekly Roundup: Major Updates to PaaS
Including Windows Azure, Stackato and more
Jan. 28, 2013 04:00 PM
Over the last week the cloud world seemed to be showered with heaps of new offerings and releases from the cloud providers. There had been a few announcements and new feature release from Microsoft, Amazon, Cloudera and StackMob. Also, there was some good news for developers from Google, CloudFoundry and Hortonworks. Plus, HP Cloud showcased its new cloud migration service to the enterprises.
Here’s a quick summary of cloud happenings over the last week.
Beginning with the IaaS leader, Amazon has introduced a new High Memory Cluster Eight Extra Large instance for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). Which is designed for memory-intensive applications, like in-memory analytics, databases, caching, and scientific computing. One of the new IaaS players, HP Cloud has showcased its Application Workload Migration services. They have presented a live demo on how quickly the Enterprise Applications can be migrated from a traditional data centre to the HP Public Cloud. Also, they have proved the efficiency by migrating a multi-tier web application from a dedicated server to the public cloud in just 12 minutes.
One of the major PaaS players, Windows Azure, has announced the general availability (GA) release of Windows Azure Media Services, which provides extremely scalable, end-to-end media solutions for streaming on-demand video to consumers on any device. There was another release of its new capability Notification Hubs that provides a highly scalable, cross-platform, push notification infrastructure that enables the developer to efficiently route push notification messages to millions of mobile users and devices. In addition, Azure introduced a new functionality SQL Server Native Backup functionality, which simplifies the backup and restore capability of an on-premises SQL Server database to Windows Azure. Furthermore, its final announcement of the week was about offering lots of new add-ons and data services at Windows Azure Store.
Google has released code samples and tools for cloud services such as App Engine and BigQuery on the online repository GitHub. This is the first time that Google has moved away from code.google.com to github.com. Cloud Foundry has provided guidance on deploying and managing real-time applications on Cloud Foundry using common Node.js examples and Redis key-value store capabilities.
Some of the backend providers have also made some new releases. StackMob has released iOS SDK v.1.2.0 that enhances the performance of the SDK as well as a new interface for working with Core Data. This release also includes a caching system for fetching without needing to make network calls. ActiveState has announced about their support for Java 7. The latest Stackato release (2.6.7) includes Java 7 in its list of core runtimes, easily selectable at deploy time.
Cloudera, the Big Data platform provider has released the Cloudera Impala Beta (version 0.4) and Cloudera Manager 4.1.3 with some key enhancements. Hortonworks, another Big Data player has announced the availability of the Hortonworks Sandbox, easy-to-use, flexible and comprehensive learning environment that provides a rapid on-ramp to learn and explore enterprise Apache Hadoop.

Cloud computing is a technology that has rapidly evolving peppered with a lot of hype along the way. Customers find it hard to navigate through this and make sense of what aspects of this technology will give them real business benefit.

Reads: 10,471 By Larry Bettino Did you know that ninety percent of the data in the world has been created in the last two years? Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion (or 2.518) bytes of data, according to IBM.
As corporations across all industries globally are struggling with how to retain, aggregate and analyze this mounting volume of what the industry refers to as Big Data, it also provides a unique opportunity for innovative startups that recognize the business prospects Big Data presents. Big Data is not just unlocking new information but new sources of economic and business value.
Interactivity is driving Big Data, with people and machines both consuming and creating it. Digital companies focused on becoming good at aggregating and analyzing the data created by the end users of their product, who then provide their customers with solid insights taken from that data are at a distinct competitive advantage over others in the marketplace. Reads: 8,295 By Elizabeth White Industry-specific clouds are those PaaS, IaaS, and PaaS services that are tailored for a specific vertical, such as transportation, retail, finance, and health care. IDC sees a $65 billion market in these industry solutions for 2013, rising to $100 billion in 2016.
The value of industry-specific clouds is that businesses within a vertical can connect to applications, processes, and databases that are pre-defined for that vertical within a public or private cloud. They can extend processes and databases into the business domain, versus defining the data and processes within a generic cloud-based platform.
So, are industry specific clouds right for your business? What options are out there? How do you figure out the ROI? It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc.
Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years.
Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing.
Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come. No purchase orders to fill out, no equipment to wait for on the loading dock. Just instant access to the resources you need, when you need them. Enterprise identity or social login can both be a part of your go-to-cloud strategy, but you must plan for this upfront, rather than try to retrofit identity and access control at a later date.
